Spider Fight: Battle of the Arachnids
Spider fight involves two arachnids pitted against each other on a stick. It is a common game in Asia, specifically in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It’s also played by inmates in some US prisons. In this blog, however, let’s focus on the game as it is played in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, spider fight started as a children’s game. Over time, however, it created controversy when adults came into play. Some adults saw a gambling opportunity in this children’s game. Soon enough, wagers on the game were involved. And, children were attracted to the bet money that their studies were compromised. That’s why, today, this game is discouraged.
On the other hand, some parents frown upon spider fights for the reason that the arachnids might hurt their children.
Nevertheless, for the sake of reminiscing the way we were, I share this traditional Filipino game. Spider game was one of the fun activities we did before the age of computers and gadgets. This was the time when spider fight was a pure kids’ game. No betting was yet introduced. And, I wish it never happened.
Traditional Filipino Games Series #12:
Spider Fight
The arachnids used in spider fights are not poisonous ones. Rather, they are those found in the fields, power lines, and on trees.
Mechanics of Spider Fight
- Materials required in the game are a stick and two spiders. The length of the stick depends on what the opposing parties agreed on.
- Fighter spiders are of relatively the same size to ensure an even match.
- The opposing players put their respective spiders on each end of the stick.
- Before the fight, the players tickle their spiders to stimulate them.
- The spider that falls off the stick three times during the fight loses the match.
Spider Storage
Children usually keep at least two spiders at a time. And, funny how they treat their arachnids like pets. They store them either in a matchbox or any hand-made containers. To prevent their “pets” from fighting each other inside the box, they make small compartment for each one.
