How Does the Modern Generation See Christmas?

Sadly, the meaning of Christmas is now readily associated with Santa Claus. It seems the big white-bearded man replaces Jesus at the center of the celebration. It’s time we bring back the true meaning of the season.

Ask a millennial or any younger person today regarding his concept of Christmas. I bet the top answers include parties, shopping, binge eating, and drinking. And, the person that brings us the season sits at the bottom of the list. Well, this does not come as a surprise anymore!

The True Meaning of Christmas

Materialism and commercialism rule the day, effectively drowning the true meaning of Christmas. Everywhere you go, whether you’re in a multi-faith nation or in a Christian country, Christmas is represented by glitters! The colors red, green, and gold set the mood. Businessmen hype up the season by instilling in us that “It’s the season of giving” (read: buying!). And, of course, the other half of the blame goes to the buying public. We are too consumed with our desire to party, and exchange gifts for the sake of it.

But lest we forget, let’s look back at the root of why Christmas exists.

The first Christmas was on the day Jesus, the Son of God, was born. He came to us for one purpose. That is, to give us life and save us from perdition due to our sins. The baby Savior grew to preach the way to salvation. But, because His teaching was opposed to what the secular world believes, He was put to death. Death on the Cross is the culmination of mankind’s salvation history.

Therefore, the reason for celebrating Christmas goes beyond the baby in the manger. It’s not about the presents underneath the tree. And, it isn’t even all about the feeling we experience during the season. Rather, Christmas is about the Person that was nailed to the tree. So that we gain life!
